AVYFA Kickoff Bowl at Boron

We participated in the AVYFA Kickoff Bowl on August 23, 2008 in Boron. Sixty-two teams from all thirteen AVYFA communities played scrimmages. Each team got to scrimmage with three or four other teams. We do not have pictures from all of the scrimmages. Pictures Here.

RIM @ Mammoth

Coached by John Trujillo and Rick Blake, the Seniors came out to play. Denis Orrick ran 53 yards to score the touchdown with Tyler Wormhoudt taking in the point after. Nathan Everson stopped a RIM point after. While RIM scored touchdowns, the Mammoth defense blocked many of their point after attempts. The small Senior team played valiantly but couldn't add any more touchdowns. Final score, Mammoth 7 - RIM 44.

Mojave @ Mojave

The Seniors took on a tough opponent with Mojave's large and fast players. They were unable to move the ball toward the end zone while Mojave scored 6 times. All of the Mammoth Seniors played hard but were overwhelmed by the strong Mojave team. Nathan Everson did manage to make a nice gain around the right side as the game ended. Final Score: Mammoth 0 - Mojave 39.

Kern Valley @ Mammoth

Led by Bryan Galvan, playing quarterback for the first time in his life, the twelve man Senior team challenged Kern Valley to a fantastic game. Armondo Montanez recovered a Kern Valley fumble early in the game giving Tyler Wormhoudt the opportunity to steadily move the ball behind his blockers - breaking tackles and making first downs. Tyler charged through center to score. Nathan Everson got into the Kern Valley backfield. Tyler made a good run to the 6 yard line. Denis Orrick got a first down. Bryan made a key stop. The defense was holding the line. Tyler racked up another long run. Score 6-0 Mammoth at half time.

Denis Orrick recovered a Kern Valley Fumble. Matt Conn intercepted a KV pass at the goal line to stop KV. Kern Vally scored in the third quarter but the Huskies blocked their point after to keep the score tied 6-6. Mammoth recovered a KV fumble. The two teams battle back and forth - each making goal line stands as regulation play ended in a tie. WOW! what an intense battle.

Kern Valley got the ball first in overtime and scored on fourth down. Mammoth was unable to score. Two great teams played hard in a game both can be proud of. Final score: Mammoth 6 - Kern Valley 12.

Bishop @ Bishop

The Seniors provided another exciting game. Andre Escobar was in the Bishop back field and tackling hard. Matt Conn made a great punt return. Tyler Wormhoudt broke loose on an 85 yard touchdown run. Bishop began moving with pass play but the Huskies held them. Denis Orrick recovered a Bishop fumble. Tyler ran down the sidelines for a 65 yard touchdown and Denis took in the point after. Quarterback Bryan Galvan intercepted a Bishop pass. Bishop scored to make it 13-6 Mammoth at half time.

Bishop scored in the second half and kicked the extra point to put Bishop ahead by one point. The two teams battled back and fourth, both making strong stands to keep the other from scoring. Everyone played hard and it was an exciting game all the way to the final seconds. Final Score: Mammoth 13 - Bishop 14.

Lancaster @ Lancaster

The Seniors lined up eleven men against a strong Lancaster team that racked up six touchdowns. The Huskies played with heart but couldn't cross the goal line. When Quarterback Bryan Galvan was injured Coach John Trujillo had to improvise since alternate Quarterback Tyler Wormhoudt had been unable to attend the game. The team played full bore to the very end. Final score: Mammoth 0 – Lancaster 39

Trona @ Mammoth

The Senior defense dominated Trona. Denis Orrick racked up first downs and three touchdowns including one on a 61 yard run. Tyler Wormhoudt had a 50 yard touchdown run called back then ran the ball 45 yards to the nine yard line where Denis charged through center to score. Andre Escobar kicked the point after twice. Andre recovered a Trona fumble. Quarterback Bryan Galvan weaved through the Trona defenders for a big gain. Tyler moved the ball on nice runs and scored a point after after a broken attempt to kick it. Edgar Villiano recovered a Trona fumble. Bryan completed a great pass to Armondo Montanez. Tyler scored on a 25 yard run and Denis took in the point after.

With the score 30-0 Mammoth at half time the officials gave Trona the ball on the 50 after every turn-over until they scored. Armondo intercepted a Trona pass. Andre, Denis, Curtis Shapiro, Kyle Sardella and other teammates were all over the Trona back field .. pushing them back. Trona scored with 55 seconds left in the game.
Final score: Mammoth 30 - Trona 6.

Quarterback Bryan Galvan #89 advanced the ball on several runs as he led his team to victory.

Boron @ Boron

The Seniors came to play ball. Tyler Wormhoudt blocked two passes. Andre Escobar made a touchdown saving tackle. Cesar Leyba made a good kickoff return. Denis Orrick sacked the quarterback. Tyler scored twice on 50 yard runs. Steven recovered a Boron fumble and racked up first downs. He scored twice and had one called back on a penalty. Quarterback Bryan Galvan made a good kickoff return and led his team in a fearce battle. They were moving toward the potentially winning touchdown when time ran out. Everyone played hard in an exciting game.
Final score: Mammoth 24 – Boron 31

California City @ Mammoth

Because of the rain there are no pictures or highlights. The Seniors came in sixth out of seven teams in the Northern Conference. Final score: Mammoth 6 – California City 0
