AVYFA Kickoff Bowl at Boron

We participated in the AVYFA Kickoff Bowl on August 23, 2008 in Boron. Sixty-two teams from all thirteen AVYFA communities played scrimmages. Each team got to scrimmage with three or four other teams. We do not have pictures from all of the scrimmages. Pictures Here.

RIM @ Mammoth

The Sophomores under coaches Lyn Morris, Rob Broyles and Glenn Kreis lead by Quarterback Brett Morris fought hard against a large RIM team. Steven Orrick and others carried the ball but couldn't get the team into the end zone. Julia Loera and Audrey Rodriguez helped stop RIM runs along with the other Mammoth defenders.
Final score, Mammoth 0 - RIM 37.

Mojave @ Mojave

The Sophomores started off strong with work horse Steven Orrick making a long run to the 1 yard line, then scoring the first touchdown on the next play. Mojave came right back with a score. Steven and his blockers racked up some first downs. Mammoth was moving the ball but Mojave held, then scored. Steven made a long run to score and took in the point after to put Mammoth ahead 13-12 but Mojave made it 13-19 at the half.

Brett Morris chased down the Mojave ball carrier to drop him at the 1 yard line but they scored on the next play. Audrey Rodriguez slowed down Mojave with her defensive tackles. Final Score: Mammoth 13 - Mojave 32.

Kern Valley @ Mammoth

The Sophomores started out pounding out first downs. Steven Orrick and David Trujillo just kept charging up center behind their blockers to gain first down after first down. Unfortunately Kern Valley scored twice while keeping Mammoth out of the end zone to make it 0-13 Kern Valley at half time.

Audrey Rodriguez chased down the Kern Valley ball carrier to stop a long run. Steven and David kept adding first downs. Brett Morris ran around right end to score with Steven taking in the point after. Julia Loera stopped a KV touchdown. Everest Webber sacked the KV ball carrier in their back field. Unfortunately KV added two more scores. Final Score: Mammoth 7 - Kern Valley 25.

Bishop @ Bishop

David Trujillo and Steven Orrick gained yards breaking tackles. Audrey Rodriguez had a great day tackling Bishop Sophomores. Travis Kreis recovered a Bishop fumble. Steven scored a touchdown. Audrey launched a great kick after the touchdown. Everest Webber made a big stop. In spite of the team's strong play, they were unable to contain Bishop. Final Score: Mammoth 7 - Bishop 36.

Lancaster @ Lancaster

The Sophomores were unable to keep the Lancaster Cowboys out of the end zone during the first half as they racked up four touchdowns. Jesse Montanez, on loan from the Freshmen, got in the Cowboy backfield. Everest Webber, David Trujillo and Steven Orrick moved the ball and Steven scored late in the game.
Final score: Mammoth 6 – Lancaster 28

Trona @ Mammoth

The Sophomores traded touchdowns for much of the first half until the Huskies started kicking the ball away from Trona's speedy kickoff return player. Everest Webber started off with a long kickoff return. David Trujillo advanced the ball and Steven Orrick scored the first touchdown and point after. David and Steven supported by their team moved the ball steadily. Steven scored all five touchdowns. Trona scored four. Quarterback Brett Morris recovered a Trona fumble and connected passes with Everest Webber twice and Audrey Rodriquez once. Audrey intercepted a Trona pass. Everyone played hard in a great game. Final score: Mammoth 33 - Trona 24.

Boron @ Boron

The Boron team just outplayed the Huskies who were unable to get their game moving. Everyone played hard but it just wasn't their day. Final score: Mammoth 0 – Boron 46

California City @ Mammoth

Because of the rain there are no pictures or highlights. The Sophomores came in sixth out of seven teams in the Northern Conference. Final score: Mammoth 0 – California City 26
