AVYFA Kickoff Bowl at Mammoth

We participated in the AVYFA Kickoff Bowl on August 22, 2009 at Mammoth. Forty-two teams from all ten AVYFA communities played scrimmages. Each team got to scrimmage with four other teams. We played Bishop, California City, Mojave and High Desert. We do not have pictures from all of the scrimmages.

Big Bear @ Mammoth

In their first game of the season, in a light rain, Freshman Jesse Montanez #23 made an early first down. Ryan Campos #37 had a long run. Dylan Martin #48 charged up the middle for a good gain as the team moved toward the goal line but Big Bear held. In the second quarter Jesse Montanez #23 made a touchdown saving tackle. Quarterback Max Mueller #8 completed a pass to Ramon Yanez #22 as the first half ended.

The Big Bear long legged Quarterback racked up three touchdowns. The Huskies stopped all the point afters. In the final quarter Ryan Campos #37 made a big gain up center. Dylan Martin ran 45 yards for the Huskies only touchdown. Ryan Campos #37 made a big punt return. Final score: Mammoth 6, Big Bear 18

California City @ California City

These well matched teams had a great game. Ryan Campos #37 gained a lot of yards and passed to Cody Elliott #21 for big gains. Cal City scored first but the Huskies held them to regain the ball numerous times. Cody caught a pass and ran 45 yards to score their only touchdown. Max Mueller #8 took in the point after. Max caught a Cal City ball carrier to save a touchdown and the defense held Cal City at the 10 yard line as the half ended - Mammoth 7, Cal City 8.

The defense and offense played well in the second half. Ryan Campos #37 broke tackles for a first down. Jesse Montanez made a key tackle to stop a touchdown run. Passes to Cody Elliott #21 resulted in first downs as the team had a good drive going when time ran out. Final score: Mammoth 7 – California City 14

Kern Valley @ Kern Valley

Ryan Campos #37 returned the Kern Valley kickoff 30 yards. Max Mueller #8 intercepted a KV pass. Ryan completed a pass to Cody Elliott #21 for a big gain. Ryan recovered a KV fumble. Cody ran up the middle for a first down. Ryan ran around left end to the nine yard line. On fourth and eleven Ryan completed a pass to Cody for the first touchdown, climaxing a great drive down the field. Max tackled the KV kickoff return runner. Ramon Yanez recovered a KV fumble to stop their drive as the half ended.

Jesse Montanez #23 made a great tackle. KV scored. Ryan made a great kickoff return and would have scored if he hadn't lost control of the ball. A KV player stole the ball from a Mammoth player and scored. Ryan completed a pass to Cody for a first down. Max made a great run around right end for a first down on the five yard line. KV intercepted a Mammoth pass to stop their drive. Ryan recovered a KV fumble on the five yard line. Ryan ran up the middle for the second Huskie touchdown. The point after kick was blocked. KV scored. Mammoth was driving down the field when KV intercepted a pass with 32 seconds to go to wrap up the game .. a great well matched offensive defensive battle.
Final score: Mammoth 12 – Kern Valley 19

On the second play of the game Ryan Campos #37 ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Cody Jayne #51 tackled the Bishop kickoff return player. Jesse Montanez #23 tackled in the Bishop back field. Mammoth held Bishop. Bishop held Mammoth. Mammoth Held Bishop. Ryan made a long run. Dylan Martin #48 eight yards up the middle. Cody Elliot #21 up the middle for a first down. Ryan up the middle for 7 yards. Dylan up the middle for a first down. Jesse around the right side 19 yards for second Huskie touchdown. Jesse in the Bishop back field. Bishop completed a long pass and Cody Elliott tackled the ball carrier on the five yard line. Bishop scored. Zack Campos #28 recovered Bishop onside kickoff and the half ended.

Bishop completed a pass and Max Mueller #8 tackled. Jesse Montanez and Cody Elliott made tackles. Ryan Campos made a big tackle in the Bishop back field for 7 yard loss. Dylan Martin tackled Bishop behind the line and Mammoth held Bishop. Cody Elliott up the middle for 5 yards. Bishop held Mammoth. Bishop scored. 12-12 Tie. Zack Campos #28 recovered another Bishop onside kickoff. Jesse runs 55 yards breaking tackles for third Huskie touchdown. Jesse Montanez and Dylan Martin in the Bishop back field. Mammoth held Bishop through the final quarter and took over on downs with 30 seconds left to win the game. Final score: Mammoth 18 – Bishop 12

Ryan Campos #37 makes an 85 yard kickoff return to score touchdown and Ramon Yanez #22 catches a pass for the point after. Matthew Hornbeck #54 recovers Trona fumble. Cody Elliott #21 breaks tackles for a big gain. Ryan picks up a 10 yard first down but Trona holds. Dylan Eastridge #63 and Matthew Hornbeck #54 get in the Trona back field and Huskies take over on downs. Dylan Martin #48 picks up 8 yards and then a first down. Jesse Montanez #23 gains 6 yards on the right. Dylan Martin and Ryan Campos pick up yards up the middle. Ryan goes 22 yards on the left side for Huskies second touchdown. Max goes up the middle for the point after. Jesse makes a great tackle to stop the Trona kickoff return. Jesse runs down ball carrier to save touchdown. Mammoth recovers a blocked Trona pass. Ryan completes a pass to Ramon as the first half ends.

This was a big defensive battle by both teams. Mammoth in the RIM backfield. Jesse Montanez #23 pushing them back. Cody Elliott #21 and Dylan Martin #48 up the middle. Max Mueller #8 advanced 6 yards for first down. RIM intercepts Mammoth pass then scores on a long run. Cody Elliott #21 stopped the point after. Ryan Campos #37 takes the kickoff. Cody Elliot #21 on 20 yard and 15 yard first down runs. Ryan 15 yard first down on the 12 yard line. Cody Elliott #21 to the 2 yard line. Mammoth turns over the ball on a fumble. Mammoth holds RIM on the 2 yard line as the half ends.

Andrew Gray #10 takes the kickoff. Ryan picks up some yards but RIM holds and takes over on downs. Mammoth forces RIM to punt. Ryan catches then fumbles and recovers punt. Ryan picks up a first down. Ryan connects with Ramon Yanez #22 but RIM takes over on downs. Mammoth pushes RIM back. Dylan Martin #48 up the middle fumbles. Mammoth in RIM back field pushs them back.
