AVYFA Kickoff Bowl at Mammoth

We participated in the AVYFA Kickoff Bowl on August 22, 2009 at Mammoth. Forty-two teams from all ten AVYFA communities played scrimmages. Each team got to scrimmage with four other teams. We played Bishop, California City, Mojave and High Desert. We do not have pictures from all of the scrimmages.

Big Bear @ Mammoth

Senior Team was unable to play against Big Bear.

High Desert Patriots @ High Desert Patriots

California City @ California City

The seniors were overwhelmed by the large California City players and their effective passing game. Denis Orrick #43 broke loose to score their only touchdown and their coach conceded the game at half time.

Kern Valley @ Kern Valley

Wow! What a battle. Denis Orrick #43 broke tackles for a long run to score the first touchdown. Kern Valley came right back. Denis ran 60 yards for the second touchdown. Nathan Everson #22 stops KV kickoff return. Mammoth recovers KV fumble on 5 yard line to stop drive. Nathan makes a good gain. KV scores and Morgan Weir #99 makes nice kickoff return. Fox Kailiawa #27 makes a big gain. Denis runs 50 yards for third touchdown but KV scores twice. A pass is completed to Pablo Apodaca #61. Denis gets in two big runs as the half ends with Mammoth on the 15.

Matt Graef #7 breaks tackles for a good gain. Denis makes another 50 yard run for touchdown number four. KV intercepts a Mammoth pass and scores. Denis runs 70 yards for fifth touchdown and a pass to Fox Kailiawa #27 adds the point after. Offense and defense played a strong game against a tough opponent.
Final score: Mammoth 31 – Kern Valley 47

Bishop @ Mammoth

What a battle! Nathan Everson #22 made a 10 yard kickoff return. E.J. Banda #32 made a tackle to stop a Bishop touchdown. Bishop scored twice. Denis Orrick #43 broke loose on a 55 yard touchdown run. Denis made some big tackles in the Bishop back field and Mammoth held Bishop on the 15 yard line. Matt Graef #7 and Morgan Weir #99 got in some great tackles as the first half ended.

Pablo Apodaca #61 and Denis got into the Bishop back field. Mammoth recovered a Bishop fumble. E.J. Banda #32 passed to Fox Kailiawa #27 for a big first down. Denis ran 20 yards for a touchdown and Matt Graef #7 took in the point after. Pablo made a key block and Mammoth held Bishop again. Pablo Apodoca #61 ran 47 yards for a touchdown tieing the game at 19-19. E.J. and Denis made some key tackles and Pablo recovered a Bishop fumble. Bishop intercepted a Mammoth pass. Carlos Morales #74 tackled Bishop for a 5 yard loss and Mammoth took over on downs.

Denis made a first down up center. Denis and Pablo moved the ball and then Denis ran around the right side for a 58 yard touchdown. Pablo tackled the ball carrier on kickoff return. Denis in the back field. Brallan Martinez stops the ball carrier and Mammoth takes over on downs. Denis scores again on a 46 yard run. Outstanding offense and defense.
Final score: Mammoth 31 - Bishop 19

Trona @ Mammoth

Trona does not have a team so Mammoth wins by forfeit.

Mojave @ Mammoth

What a thriller! The Huskies started off slow. Denis Orrick #43, Matt Graef #7 and Pablo Apodaca #61 making tackles but Mojave scored twice. Denis pass to Matt for 4 yards. Denis breaks loose down the left side for a 56 yard touchdown run. Nathan Everson #22 in the backfield. Mojave scored and then recovered their kickoff. Nathan stops ball carrier on 4 yard line. Mojave passes into the end zone to score. Mojave again recovers their kickoff. Mammoth holds and takes over on downs. Denis breaks tackles and scores on 55 yard run down right side. Denis picks up dropped snap and scores point after. Mojave runs back kickoff 55 yards to score. E.J. Banda takes the kickoff, breaks tackles and almost gets away for touchdown. Denis passes to Nathan for a yard and the half ends.

Matt Graef #7 up the middle for 7 yards. Mojave holds. Denis and Vincente Reyes #64 push Mojave back. Denis makes key block. Mammoth holds and takes over on downs. Denis, on a broken play, runs 63 yards for touchdown. Denis and E.J. stop Mojave at line of scrimmage. Denis intercepts Mojave pass and runs 50 yards for touchdown. Matt stops the kickoff return. Matt and Pablo in the backfield. Brallan Martinez #72 tackles ball carrier for big loss. Denis sacks the quarterback and Mammoth takes over on downs. Denis up the middle for 3 yards. Denis down the left side 50 yards for touchdown and Mammoth leads by one point. Mammoth holds Mojave. Denis moves the ball .. breaking tackles and dragging defenders for first down. Denis breaking tackles charges 40 yards for touchdown and Pablo takes in the point after for 8 point lead. Mojave scores and kicks the point after to tie the game. Mojave recovers their on-line kick but Mammoth holds as the game ends in a tie.

In the tie breaker overtime Mojave gets the ball first with four downs from the ten yard line. Mojave scores. Mammoth plays it's four downs from the ten yard line but is unable to score and Mojave wins the game. Mammoth came back from an 18 point deficit and tied the game with strong offensive and defensive play. A game to be proud of.
Final score: Mammoth 38 – Mojave 44 in overtime.

RIM @ RIM

The Seniors never could get their game going. Denis Orrick #43, Nathan Everson #22 and Pablo Apodaca #61 played strong defense. Nick Domico #8 recovered a RIM fumble. Denis ran 35 yards down the left side for a first down. Nathan and Matt Graef #7 picked up yards. Pablo caught ball carrier on a long chase and stopped him. Carlos Morales #74 brought down a big ball carrier. Fox Kailiawa #27 recovered a RIM fumble. Final score: Mammoth 0 – RIM 41

Playoff Highlights

First Round Playoff

This was a fantastic game up to the final seconds as the Seniors climbed out of an 18 point hole to take the lead by one point. Big Bear scored and Mammoth scored to tie at 26-26. Big Bear scored in the final minutes to win. Denis Orrick #43 put in a stellar performance tackling and running for first downs and four touchdowns .. one of them a 70 yard kickoff return. Caleb Koehn #80 made key tackles. E.J. Banda #32 scored the first point after and recovered a Big Bear fumble. Fox Kailiawa #27 ran a good kickoff return. This team with many first time players wrapped up a great season with an outstanding offensive and defensive game by every member. Final score: Mammoth 26 – Big Bear 32
